Mengede is an AI-powered pathway assistant designed for Ethiopian students and young people who are trying to make better decisions about their education, skills, and future careers.
The Problem
Many students and young professionals in Ethiopia enter education and careers with ambitions, passions, and potential — yet many never get the chance to turn those aspirations into reality. Instead, they end up following paths chosen by circumstances, limited information, family expectations, or simply because they did not know what other options were available.
Consider a student who successfully passes the EUEE. From the outside, this looks like the finish line. But in reality, it is where another, much harder journey begins:
Where should I study? What should I study? What career does that lead to? How do I prepare for it? What opportunities are available to me? What should I expect when I get there?
For many students, these questions remain unanswered. They may choose a field because it was the available option, because someone told them it was a “good” career, or because they simply had no one to guide them through the decision. A student with the potential to become an exceptional developer can find themselves studying something they have no passion for. A future engineer can become lost between uncertainty, financial pressure, limited opportunities, and the fear of making the wrong choice.
And the cost is not only academic or professional.
Spending years moving toward a future that does not feel like your own can create stress, frustration, self-doubt, and a growing sense of hopelessness. When students repeatedly feel that they are falling behind or that they have no control over their direction, their motivation and productivity can suffer. What begins as uncertainty about a career can gradually become a deeper feeling of “I don't know where my life is going.”
Meanwhile, the potential that could have been developed — the skills that could have been built, the opportunities that could have been pursued, and the careers that could have been created — remains unrealized.
Mengede exists to address this gap.
Instead of leaving a student alone with a major decision and a collection of disconnected information, Mengede helps them understand where they are, what their options are, where those options can lead, and what concrete steps they can take next.
The goal is not to decide a student's future for them. It is to give them enough clarity, guidance, planning, and access to opportunities and mentors to make that future their own
How Mengede Works
Mengede combines AI guidance, planning, opportunities, and human mentorship in one platform.
Users can have conversations with Mengede through text or voice, explain their goals and challenges, and receive guidance adapted to their situation. The system can help users break larger goals into practical steps through personalized study plans, tasks, and learning activities.
Mengede also connects students with relevant opportunities and mentors, allowing them to move beyond AI-generated advice and access real people who can support their progress.
For mentor sessions, Mengede includes a complete booking flow with server-side validation and links.et payment verification, helping make paid mentorship more reliable while preventing duplicate receipt usage.
Built for Real Interaction
Mengede is designed to feel less like a static information platform and more like a personal pathway companion.
Its voice experience, powered through Voxide, allows users to interact naturally while supporting both English and Amharic. This makes the experience more accessible to users who may prefer speaking rather than typing and allows language preferences to remain synchronized throughout the application.
The platform also keeps track of important learning and interaction data, including student profiles, conversations, study plans, tasks, quiz results, and mentor bookings.
Technology
Mengede uses a modern web architecture with a clear separation between the user experience and trusted server-side operations.
The frontend provides the interactive student experience, while an Express and MongoDB/Mongoose backend manages persistent data and operations that should not be trusted to the client.
The backend handles student data, conversations, learning plans, mentor availability, bookings, and payment verification. This architecture also makes it easier to expand Mengede without rebuilding the core system as new features are introduced.
Designed to Scale
Mengede is built around a data-driven model rather than a fixed set of recommendations.
As the platform grows, more students, mentors, learning plans, opportunities, subjects, and career pathways can be added without changing the fundamental architecture. New mentors can be configured with their own availability and payment requirements, while the same booking and verification system can support additional mentors and services.
The separation between the frontend and backend also creates a foundation for future integrations, additional payment providers, richer opportunity databases, and more advanced AI-powered personalization.
The Vision
Mengede aims to become a pathway layer between where a young person is today and where they want to go next.
Instead of simply answering questions, Mengede helps users understand their current situation, identify realistic goals, discover relevant opportunities, create a plan, and connect with people who can help them move forward.
At its core, Mengede is built around one simple question:
“Where am I now, where do I want to go, and what should I do next?”
